Happy New Year everyone! I hope that everyone had a wonderful New Year’s Eve, whether it was spent out with friends or quietly inside. My plans for NYE involved drinks, a house show, and about 150 friends cramped in a tiny backyard and apartment. What actually happened is I had one too many champagnes during the day and ended up falling asleep on the couch from 8:30 pm to 1 am. I was especially disappointed the next day when my friends all told me how awesome of a show it was! I tried to think of who to blame for me missing out on NYE when I knew that it was no one’s fault but my own. That’s when I realized that there are a few habits I need to break this year before I break my relations with people. When life doesn’t go as planned I find myself trying to blame anyone but myself instead of just taking responsibility for my actions. We’re all human, make mistakes, and life isn’t perfect which is why it is so exciting and beautiful. I don’t believe in a ‘new year, new me attitude’, but I do believe in realizing what you need to work on.
2016 goals:
- Take it Easy- I am a very self critical person when it comes to everything which has manifested itself into many aspects of my life. Anyone who experiences this knows that it is exhausting. There is no harder battle than one with your own mind. Whenever I begin having compulsive thoughts or taking things personally I have found that it is best for me excuse myself and breathe. It helps to consider what is really bothering me and if I need to go home. I like to ground myself with thoughts about what is going well in life, who I care about that is happy, and positive thoughts about the future.
- Don’t Pout- Pouting doesn’t do anyone any good. Anything that is like whining/jealousy never looks cute. It is just a bad idea. When something doesn’t go as planned I have learned to continue moving forward instead of adding negativity to the situation.
- Uncertainty and Anxiety- For me, the fuel of my anxiety is my uncertainty in life. Which is silly because unless you know that something is going to affect your future self for certain, there is no point in worrying about the possibilities. A majority of the time those fears will never be a reality. Compulsive worrying is not worth the physical and emotional side effects. When my anxiety begins to overwhelm me I find a way to meditate which I consider anything that relaxes me. Here are a few examples of what time and time again works in relaxing me:
- Pampering myself. Applying my makeup, doing my nails, fixing my hair, and pick out and outfit I feel great in is what I swear rids me of my anxiety. There is something so relaxing and meditative about taking care of yourself, while being creative at the same time.
- Coloring. I have always found that coloring and painting really help relax the mind. It’s a peaceful activity to do at anytime of day on your own. Lately I have seen a lot of people carrying around adult coloring books which is really cool. You can find them on amazon, art supply stores, and on school campuses.
- Adventure. Anything that involves getting out in nature works fantastic for me when I want to clear my head. Especially when there is physical activity involved. Just yesterday I went on a hike in the morning and my mood was vastly improved for the day. I didn’t catch myself worrying as much or feeling bothered. I think that it is a perfect idea to dedicate a day of the week to head out to nature with your best friend.
- Meditation before Sleep. So many people suffer with worrisome thoughts biting at them once night hits. To reduce my chance of staying up thinking I make sure that I follow a set sleeping schedule, don’t eat sugar before bed, no electronics in bed, and I meditate while I lie down in bed. Similar to counting sheep, I imagine a hamster running on a wheel to relax. It might sound funny, but it works! My mom has even told me that she makes up stories in her head about characters like those in Beatrix Potter books when her mind is restless. If you have issues sleeping, I completely suggest trying to use your imagination in a sweet way to soothe yourself into a slumber.
Those are my reminders of what to work on in 2016. 🙂
I would love to if anyone shared in the comments their 2016, share a link to your own 2016 goals, or let me know if this post helped you at all!
I hope you all love the outfit too. It’s what I wore for NYE and New Year’s Day 🙂 I applied star confetti to my cheeks with eyelash glue to create a festive Valfre makeup look. The eyelash glue did pull dye from the confetti which left little pink stains all over my face for the next two days! Be warned!
Love you all,
Kendall xx
